Tarima returns from Betazed newly fitted with an inhibitor chip to regulate her telepathy and even less thrilled to learn that she’s being reassigned from the War College to the Academy. Chancellor Ake, still reading signs of emotional instability among the cadets, recruits Sylvia Tilly (of DSC) to lead a mandatory drama course designed to help them heal.
The Academy cadets go on a four-day break. As Darem is apparently abducted through a portal, Jay-Den follows, only to learn that this was a Khionian pre-wedding ritual. Caleb remains on campus to collect his thoughts, joined by Genesis, who is worried about Captain Ake nominating her for the Pre-Command Track.
The Academy and War College cadets participate in a routine training exercise aboard the derelict USS Miyazaki, which contains an experimental singularity drive that disabled the ship a century ago, killing its crew. Aliens called Furies board the Miyazaki and take the cadets hostage. Vance and Ake make a deal for assistance with Nus Braka, who has fought Furies before.
Due to her own work as an emissary for the Makers, SAM becomes obsessed with the mystery of Benjamin Sisko, the Emissary of the Prophets who vanished at the end of the Dominion War. At the same time, Ake helps War College Chancellor Kelrec prepare for an important meeting with another chancellor with the help of the Doctor and Reno in an effort to make peace between them. Kelrec reveals that he feels that Ake abandoned Starfleet, leading to his animosity towards her.
Klingon cadet Jay-Den Kraag learns that his family may have been killed in a starship crash on their way to a refugee camp. During the Burn, the Klingon Empire was destroyed, leaving the Klingons an endangered species facing extinction. As the cadets engage in a series of debates on the topic, Admiral Vance enlists Chancellor Ake's help to propose a solution to Klingon General Obel Wochak.
It's a prank war and both the War College and Starfleet Academy are raising the stakes. The cadets also start learning lessons about trust, teamwork, and the meaning of leadership.
Chancellor Ake welcomes the incoming Starfleet Academy class, and contrasts them with the current War College, the more militarized academy that remained after The Burn. The cadets are assigned roommates; Caleb and Darem complain when they are assigned to the same room. After hearing from Nus Braka that Anisha had been on the planet Goja V, Caleb and Ake search for it, but he is unable to find any record of it. Ake and Admiral Vance discuss an upcoming delegation from the Betazoids, who left the Federation after The Burn.
Set in the 32nd century after the Burn shattered the Federation's warp network, Starfleet Academy reopens to train a new generation of cadets. Caleb Mir, a troubled young hacker recruited from the penal system, navigates the Academy's rigorous first days alongside diverse recruits under a wary Chancellor. Tensions rise as past Federation fractures and hidden threats test the institution's fragile revival.
